The post Eco-Friendly New Year’s Eve Outfit Ideas to Ring in 2022 Sustainably appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

Often, when picturing a New Years Eve outfit, we might think of buying a new sparkly mini dresses or glitzy statement heels. But in addition to the laundry list of issues with fast fashion (unethical, unsustainable, and sexist just to name a few), many of these shiny party pieces are made using environmentally hazardous glitter, or embellishments sewn on by exploited labor.

But I’m here to shout from the rooftops that this does *not* mean you have to sacrifice your values or style for your year-end soiree.

There are many ways to celebrate the New Year, but no matter where you’re headed on December 31st, this Ethical Fashion NYE Guide is full of ideas of how you can create looks that will leave a lasting impression.

This guide features “alternative” approaches to finding your special outfit, whether you’re planning well in advance or looking for a last minute New Year’s Eve outfit. And, it features brands with beautiful ethical and eco-minded party dresses, evening wear, and jewelry.

Depop: another peer-to-peer platform, but skews younger and trendier

Swap (or Borrow) Before You Shop

Party dresses and formalwear are especially great pieces to swap, borrow, or rent.

If you have friends or family members with similar sizes as you, see if you can swap or borrow one of their party pieces for your New Year’s Eve celebrations.

You can also check out an online swapping platform like Swap Society (US) or Nuw (UK). Check out this post for more on clothing swaps.

Another option is to rent your special occasion dress. Generally, a peer-to-peer rental platform is a more sustainable model. Some options include ByRotation, Tulerie, and Wardrobe.

18 Sustainable & Ethical Boots to Rock All Fall and Winter Long Fri, 17 Sep 2021 14:09:00 +0000 These brands have ethical leather boots, eco-friendly vegan boots, sustainable hiking boots, ethically made winter boots, and more.

The post 18 Sustainable & Ethical Boots to Rock All Fall and Winter Long appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

Is it possible to find stylish, durable, and ethical boots? Thankfully, it is. And these 18 brands are proving that fact.

These ethical boot brands have great selections too—you’ll find consciously made heeled booties, flat short boots, tall boots, and rain boots in this curation.

What ethical considerations are there? In this guide, I looked for brands with transparent production practices that treat all workers fairly. This always includes paying fair wages and ensuring safe working conditions, and may also include healthcare, paid time off, educational resources, and opportunities for growth.

Is leather ethical? You may notice in this guide that a majority of brands utilize leather for their shoes. I am a vegetarian myself and strongly believe conventional leather is far from ideal. There are ways, though, to reduce its environmental footprint and even source leather from regenerative, climate beneficial farms. And when choosing leather, vegetable-tanned leather is much preferred whenever possible since typical chrome tanning is highly toxic.

Unfortunately, most vegan leathers aren’t so great either. Many vegan faux leathers are PVC, which is made from petroleum (gross!), or PU, which is still a completely synthetic and non-biodegradable material.

Thankfully, the options for sustainable, vegan leathers have increased in recent years and I do look for eco-friendly vegan bags and even some types of shoes. Certain categories of products, though, are really really tough to find high-quality and eco-friendly vegan options for. In my experience, boots are one of those categories.

I did find three great vegan, responsible, and ecologically sustainable brands for this guide, though, and look forward to seeing more options come to the market!

Price Range Key: $$ = $100 – $200 | $$$ = $200 – $300 | $$$+ = Over $300

17 Ethical & Sustainable Activewear Brands to Get Moving In Wed, 24 Mar 2021 16:22:00 +0000 These sustainable activewear brands have ethical and eco-friendly yoga clothing, hiking apparel, biking gear, and much more.

The post 17 Ethical & Sustainable Activewear Brands to Get Moving In appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

From leggings to tanks, these ethical and sustainable activewear brands have the perfect eco-friendly sportswear, gym wear, yoga clothes, and outdoor adventure gear for getting moving and staying healthy.

So, what makes an activewear brand sustainable or ethical?

Given the performance qualities expected of activewear, most workout clothing is made from synthetic fabrics. However, there are some sustainable natural fabrics that can be used for light workouts, such as organic cotton. When synthetic fibers are used, it’s best to look for materials made from recycled, up-cycled, or regenerated content, such as recycled polyester or ECONYL (regenerated nylon).

There has been a debate about the sustainability of recycled and regenerated synthetics, because when washed, these recycled synthetic fabrics still release microfibers that pollute oceans and kill marine life.

In order to prevent these microfibers from being shed into waterways, be sure to place your garments made from synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon (including recycled synthetics!) in a Guppyfriend Washing Bag that can catch those nasty microfibers!

As far as ethics go, look for certifications like Fair Trade and other signs of transparency. Does the brand’s website share specific information about factories, wages and conditions for garment workers? Do they have systems of traceability? Can the brand tell you where each and every garment is being made? Do they visit the workshops/factories themselves regularly? Do they share photos and videos from the factories? Do the countries they source from have high labor standards? If not, what are they doing to verify that these factories uphold high standards?

I know this is a lot, so to help you sort out fact from greenwashing on your search for truly eco-friendly athletic clothing and gear, I’ve curated a guide of sustainable activewear brands with either all ecologically friendly and ethical activewear or with at least some responsibly-made collections. (If there are only certain collections from the brand that are sustainable or ethical, I made sure to include what to look for from that brand!)

Note that this guide includes partners and affiliates. As always, all brands meet strict standards for sustainability and are brands we love — and that we think you’ll love, too!

1. Kaira Active

Each luxuriously soft piece is made responsibly in California by makers who earn over above the state’s $15/hour minimum wage and well above the average LA garment worker wage.

30 Affordable Sustainable Clothing & Accessories Brands for Accessible Conscious Style Fri, 19 Mar 2021 08:20:49 +0000 These affordable sustainable clothing and accessories brands have people and planet-friendly fashion at accessible prices.

The post 30 Affordable Sustainable Clothing & Accessories Brands for Accessible Conscious Style appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

Looking at the prices of eco-minded and ethical fashion brands, you might be wondering: where can I find affordable sustainable clothing?

The first thing to consider is that the most sustainable garments are the ones already hanging in your closet! Wearing what you already have more is the best way to reduce your clothing footprint.

And when you do want a new-to-you piece, check out your local thrift store or one of these online secondhand shops first! Shopping pre-loved is a great way to find affordable sustainable clothes.

That said, shopping secondhand is not always accessible or doesn’t always offer what you need, so there may be times that you want to buy a new piece — but without breaking the bank.

While responsible fashion brands will never hit the questionably low prices of fast fashion brands (there’s no way a brand is paying living wages when they charge $5 for a t-shirt), these conscious brands certainly have fair prices for what they are offering.

The reality is that it does typically cost more to source materials in an ecologically responsible way and it will be more expensive to pay garment workers living wages. Consciously-made garments don’t have to cost a fortune, but they will cost more than a latte.

Not sure when it’s the right time to make a conscious fashion purchase? Check out this free Closet Inventory and Budget Template that will help you track what you have, what you want/need, and determine when it’s the right time to make an investment.

Ethical Formal Dresses for Stand-Out Sustainable Style at Your Next Special Occasion Tue, 09 Mar 2021 07:03:00 +0000 Whether you need an eco prom or gown dress, this guide has you covered no matter what fancy occasions you need ethical formal dresses for.

The post Ethical Formal Dresses for Stand-Out Sustainable Style at Your Next Special Occasion appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

Whether you’re planning for an upcoming wedding, prom, gala, or any other special occasion, these ethical formal dresses will be just the fit.

Finding consciously-made formalwear used to be (and to some extent still is) notoriously difficult, but this guide has curated the best of the best special occasion dresses for even the fanciest of outings.

These brands have party-perfect minis, chic cocktail dresses, elegant evening gowns, and even pieces that would make for fabulous sustainable prom dresses!

[Check out this guide for sustainable wedding dresses and this guide for more causal eco-friendly dresses]

Before browsing this guide, though, remember to make the most of what you already have in your closet. Or, make the most of what already exists in circulation by borrowing from a friend/family member or swapping with someone you know has a formal dress that they won’t wear again.

Another great option? Checking out resale platforms like Vestiare Collective for designer brands or ThredUP for everyday and premium/mid-tier brands!

And if you just need a special occasion dress for one event, check out rental sites like Rent the Runway that offer affordable ways to get formalwear for a limited time.

If none of these options are available to you or you really feel ready to invest in an extra-special garment that you can wear for years to come, keep scrolling for our list of brands with sustainable and ethical formal dresses.

This guide contains partners and affiliate links. As always, all brands meet rigorous standards for sustainability and are brands we truly love — and that we think you’ll love too!

The Best Eco-Friendly Kids & Baby Brands for Adorable Organic Apparel Wed, 10 Feb 2021 12:46:15 +0000 These brands have the most adorable sustainable kids' clothing and organic baby clothes made from eco-friendly and non-toxic fibers.

The post The Best Eco-Friendly Kids & Baby Brands for Adorable Organic Apparel appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

Whether you’ll soon be welcoming a newborn or looking for a sustainable gift for the little ones in your life, these eco-friendly baby clothes and kids clothes brands have you covered with everything from super sweet onesies and baby gowns to playtime wear and school clothing.

Why choose organic baby clothes and kids clothes?

You may notice an emphasis on organic fabrics in this post, and that is because…

Little one’s have more sensitive — and penetrable — skin.

As one study put it, “infant skin is functionally still developing” and the “impaired barrier function of newborn skin” makes a newborn “more susceptible to chemical irritation” In addition, a newborn’s skin surface area is 3 times greater than an adult’s, by volume.

Which means that if a newborn is exposed to the exact same amount of a substance as an adult, they may absorb much more of that substance. There haven’t been any studies done on the impact of fabrics on baby skin, but you may feel better about choosing organic for the littlest ones in your life.

It’s better for farmers and the planet.

It’s no secret that synthetic fabrics made from petroleum are damaging the environment, but we also have to talk about cotton. Conventional cotton — though sometimes advertised as “natural” and “eco” is actually one of the world’s most pesticide-ridden and genetically modified crops in the world. This means conventional cotton often creates hazards for farmers, ecosystems, and potentially the wearers as well.

What is GOTS-certified organic?

The GOTS certification, which standards for Global Organic Textile Standard, is the most reputable verification for organic fibers in the world.

This standard not only ensures that the crop (typically cotton or flax for linen) was grown organically, but also that every single step of the manufacturing process was done in an ecologically and socially responsible way.

This means things like no toxic chemicals or dyes were used and the factories were free of slave, child, or exploited labor. While no certification is perfect, including GOTS, you may feel more at ease knowing there was at least this layer of verification in the organic baby clothes and organic kids clothing you are purchasing.

Where can I find sustainable kids’ clothing and baby clothing?

So glad you asked! Here is a roundup of some of the very best sustainable kids’ and baby clothing brands.

These brands meet high standards on many fronts: they use premium non-toxic and organic fibers, follow fair labor standards (such as earning a Fair Trade certification, producing locally and transparently, or vetting suppliers in other ways), plus some brands even have take-back and repair programs to lengthen the life of their garments!
